In the Fall of 2012, A group of LACS students formed New York Youth Against Fracking to give voice to youth under 18 from all over the state who until then (to the best of our knowledge) did not have an organized group to stand with.
Last January after an amazing fast-tracked community effort, members of NYYAF, along with parents, teachers, local musicians and a talented videographer and sound recording engineer, submitted a music video of “You’ve Been Fracked” minutes before the deadline for the Artists Against Fracking’s #DontFrackNY contest.
A week later a call came from Yoko Ono herself letting us know that NYYAF had won first place in the video contest! The prize… lunch with Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon in NYC! After months of doubting it would ever happen, the lunch has finally been scheduled for April 5th. Now we must come up with the money to pay for a bus to get us to NYC and back.
Today we took a leap of faith reserved an Ithaca Airline Limousine’s 39 passenger coach! The cost of the coach is $1400 for the day. Greenstar Coop has already generously donated $700.
We know there are thousands of New Yorkers under 18 who oppose fracking. We believe that youth more than any other group have a stake in the future. We want to work with our peers across the state to mobilize the anti-fracking youth voice.
This trip to NYC gives us an opportunity to meet up with youth we would otherwise not likely meet. A contribution to this fundraising campaign will make it possible for NYYAF to grow the movement of New York Youth Against Fracking as well as celebrate the success of our “You’ve Been Fracked” video.
